An exciting position has become available for a Principal Engineer to join our Metals Business Unit in the Minerals Processing practice. Become part of a global team of innovative and trusted professionals who provide process engineering input to the different sectors within a Consulting Engineering Environment.

The Principal Engineering – Mineral Processing will be part of an engineering team providing engineering services and/or field support. Client liaison and maintaining the focus of the project on achieving unprecedented and sustained business results for the client is a large part of the work. The role will require the engineer to retain a high level understanding of the project with respect to the environmental, community, business and financial aspects to guide the client and Project Manager’s decisions related to achieving the process objectives of the project. The Principal Engineer may be required to function as Study Manager for mineral processing project assignments. The role will require the engineer to oversee, guide and develop solutions in all areas of the process plant across various systems, unit operations and process equipment. Specific tasks may include the development of process engineering deliverables; solutions to infield problems; and involvement in the execution and commissioning of these solutions. The Principal Engineer may be required to act as Lead Process Engineer, on specific assignments, responsible for coordinating the process engineering team, oversee and guide the development of process engineering deliverables ensuring they meet the project’s scope, are delivered on schedule and budget, and meet Hatch’s quality standards. Experience in Concentrator design for various commodities such as Gold, Copper, PGM’s, Copper, Lead, Zinc amongst others.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Involved in development and completion of the process engineering component of scoping, pre-feasibility and feasibility studies for projects, managing scope, schedule and budget for the process engineering team or overall project engineering team dependent on assignment.
  • Have a clear understanding of the project requirements as they relate to scope, cost and schedule.
  • Coordinate the function of the process engineering or study engineering team to deliver the process engineering or study deliverables for the project.
  • Oversee and guide the development of process engineering deliverables and tasks including test work definition, design basis, design criteria, mass and energy balance, capacity studies, trade-off studies, engineering and equipment calculations, piping and instrumentations diagrams, process control logic, and operating and capital cost estimates.
  • Collaborate with the client’s representatives to ensure full, appropriate communication and coordination in the achievement of the process objectives.
  • Manage the understanding, development and implementation of the process technology.
  • Manage the operational success of the process technology.
  • Review of capital cost estimate.
  • Lead scoping and pre-feasibility studies managing scope, schedule and budget as Study Manager.
  • Independently contacts clients, contractor representatives and project field personnel to gather or give information.
  • Develop the chemical process and appropriately document flow sheets.
  • Define unit operations and select the equipment for projects.
  • Ensure process specifications portray the appropriate information and design intent.
  • Responsible for maintaining and adherence to the process engineering standards.
  • Involvement in commissioning of equipment and systems.
  • Provide technical guidance on unusual or complex problems and supervisory approval on proposed plans for projects.
  • Oversee and guide process engineering tasks on Minerals Processing projects, in a variety of commodities. When requested, act as Study Manager or Engineering Manager on projects or studies.
  • Play a lead role in site commissioning of new equipment and process systems.
  • Participate in the preparation of proposals and other business development initiatives.
  • Facilitate and participate in client engagement meetings as part of business development initiatives.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Chemical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering or Mineral Processing degree.
  • Minimum of 20 years’ experience.
  • Design, commissioning and/or operational experience of minerals processing equipment (comminution, flotation, DMS, gravity separation, screening, thickening and filtration).
  • Experience in scoping and management of metallurgical testwork programs (benchscale, pilot scale, on-site testing).
